Advanced Practice Series
Advanced Practice Series are short 4-5 hour courses on a range of lactation topics. These courses have been reviewed for accuracy and relevance by leading lactation professionals and academics.
This series examines specialist topics or advanced knowledge and are ideal for extending your knowledge.
Each course is worth approximately 4 to 5 CERPs after you complete a simple quiz online at the end of the course.
AP01: Breastfeeding the Infant with Cleft Lip and/or Palate
Cleft lip and/or palate is one of the most common major birth defects. There is a high chance that most health professionals working in perinatal care will be involved in the care of a baby born with this defect, and the support and counselling of the parents. These clefts create many challenges to the mother/baby dyad so each baby needs to be cared for with a customized plan which is reviewed frequently. In this course you will learn detailed information about clefts – their formation, anatomical involvement, other difficulties faced by the baby, management of these factors to apply to breastfeeding techniques, and surgery details.

AP02: Jaundice and the Neonate
This course is designed for the Lactation Consultant or nurse/midwife practitioner who cares for mothers and babies in the first few weeks postpartum. You will study normal bilirubin metabolism, noting how it is related to normal physiological and breastmilk jaundice and how this process can move from a normal, protective function to pathological jaundice. The practitioners' role in preventing, or diagnosing and managing pathological jaundice will be examined with particular focus on the role of breastmilk and breastfeeding.
AP03: Critical Appraisal of Research
This course is written by Dr Genevieve Becker PhD MSc MEd IBCLC. Critical Appraisal of Research is a short course developed to help health professionals read research articles and appraise them for their validity and relevancy to their practice. Data collection, statistical analysis, understanding of results and assessing the quality of research findings are all described.
The aim of this course is to give the participant confidence to read a research article, taking note of what it is, where the evidence comes from, what it is saying, how good the evidence is and its relevance to their practice.
